At Pentecost

Pentecost 8T68nxkTE
Expectation hovered over them
as they, the believers there,
with their stories to tell,
and their memories to share….

Broke the bread and drank the wine
for a death that didn’t last,
sang the Psalms, spoke his words
from the three years past.

Squashed together in the upper room,
the rough with the refined,
their commonality their faith,
their joy the strongest bind.

A whistling cyclone filled the house
and as light as the touch of grace,
tongues of fire fell on their heads
and languages filled the place.

They spoke in tongues unknown,
of God and his wondrous ways;
the Spirit upon them, they spoke his words,
as prophesied for the last days.

The Church was born in that upper room
that Pentecost Sunday, that day,
Believing, accepting the message they heard
three thousand followed The Way.

Expectation turned to worship,
to boldness and to power,
that flowed out to the nations
from that place, from that hour.

From you, Mum

How much have I learnt –
how many ingrained truths
well-worn habits
turns of phrase
tricks of trade
lines of humour –
and wisdom
from you, Mum?

How much have I learnt –
how many ways to live
get involved
have a go
reach out
invite in –
and share
from you, Mum?

How much have I learnt –
how many truths of faith
enduring patterns
every-day prayers
reading of the Word
worshipping –
and trust
from you, Mum?

You set my path from childhood
steered me on my way.
And for this I’m thankful
on this new Mother’s Day.

Pentecost

Pentecost-Bible-Verse-5

A motley crew, we wait and pray.

The Master's gone. We wished he'd stay.

The Baptism, the promised power,

is coming soon, the awaited hour.

Pentecost. We're all together,

A violent wind, noisy weather,

blows inside, a mighty sound.

Tongues of fire spread around,

rest upon each person's head.

Our voices speak, Spirit-led.

We speak in words of unknown tongue,

men and women, old and young.

A traveller come from far away,

hears his language on that day.

He understands. The words are clear,

a simple message to his ear.

Jesus Saviour, Lord of all,

great Messiah. Heed his call.

Brother Peter takes the floor,

tells the Good News, stirs up awe.

Calls repentance. Be baptised.

Receive the Spirit, the gift so prized.

Thousands listen, turn around,

to follow Jesus, freedom found.

A Church explosion, mighty acts,

prayer and praise. Amazing facts.

One Holy Weekend

I’m a little late for Easter with this Easter poem, but I thought I’d share it anyway.

One Holy Weekend

Earth and Heaven met, and thunder roared.

Dead men walked, and leaden darkness fell.

He hung in gross indignity, God’s precious Son.

The universe convulsed, a touch of hell.

The Lord of light and loving turned away,

And for a moment dark and evil reigned.

Disciples cowered, depairing women wept.

A futile death it seemed, and nothing gained.

Then Sunday morning history changed its course.

Death defeated, Christ the Saviour rose.

The sacrifice complete, for our rebellion,

Salvation’s way, the deal brought to a close.

Rejoice, sing joyful praise because of Easter.

Walk as children of the living King.

Celebrate God’s gift of deep renewal.

His living water changes everything.

Going Deeper

Jesus on water 2

Jesus walks on water

and he calls me out

to where my feet can’t touch the ground.

Out past the familiar,

in the shallow zone,

to where the water moves and swirls.

I’m treading water deep,

I’m thrashing round.

I’ve lost my grip and my control.

My mind is tumbling, rumbling,

my heart is grasping, gasping,

my stomach’s churning, turning.

His hand’s stretched out to me.

He’s standing firm.

His gentle voice says ‘Come’.

Beyond theory and theology,

I know the possibility,

the power of his divinity.

I’m concentrating, hesitating

I’m stalling, falling,

I’m thinking, sinking,

He gently takes my hand,

buoys me up,

gives me breath and hope.

I’m walking at his side,

defying darkest depths,

in deepest, direst seas of life.

I’m with the one who made the seas,

who stirs the storms,

who calms my struggling soul.

He stills my raging storms,

quiets my soul,

leads me out to deeper things.
