Mary of Nazareth

Mary of Nazareth

It could have been awful,

The angel, the message,

Upending her plans,

Wrecking her life.

This huge imposition,

Thrust, uninvited,

Right into her womb,

Was like welcoming strife.

Pronounced ‘highly favoured,

Of women most blessed’,

Yet, conception pre-nuptial

Would surely bring shame.

Betrothed to a good man,

Her plans were laid out,

A Nazareth maiden

With no claim to fame.

She could have been tearful,

Wracked with self pity,

Wanting no part in it.

Why she be the one?

But she chose acceptance,

This highest of mandates,

Trusting God’s wisdom,

Bearing His Son.

(In case you are interested to know, the Bible tells us how Mary of Nazareth reacted.

Luke 2:38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” …

46 – 55 And Mary said:

My soul glorifies the Lord
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
holy is his name.
His mercy extends to those who fear him,
from generation to generation.
He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.
He has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
remembering to be merciful
to Abraham and his descendants forever,
just as he promised our ancestors.”)
