Shrove Tuesday

A Dutch celebration of Shrovetide, The Fight Between Carnival and Lent (1559),

Pieter Breughel the Elder

Did we need an excuse

to feast?

Did we need a reason

to pancake our eggs

to sizzle our fat?

Did we need to shrive*

for our sins?

Did we need this preparation

for our giving up

for deprivation?

We come forgiven

to Lent.

We come for renewal,

to grow in grace,

to be refined.

May we come closer to You

to listen.

May we overcome the temptation

to please ourselves,

more to live Your way.

* To confess one’s sins

With an evangelical background I never really thought about Lent until recently. Now, some of the seasonal structures seem to add richness to the year. The mileposts are reminders.
